Gordon Ryan is the most dominant no-gi grappler the sport has ever produced, and it is not an especially close argument. A product of John Danaher’s legendary New Jersey system, Ryan turned a methodical, systematized approach to grappling — positions understood as interlocking chains of cause and effect — into the most feared attacking game on earth. He does not out-scramble people. He funnels them, step by inevitable step, into a submission they agreed to three exchanges ago.
The hardware is staggering. Seven ADCC world titles put him among the most successful competitors in the history of grappling’s premier event. In 2019 he won double gold, taking the -99 kg division and the open weight in the same weekend despite competing hurt. In 2022 he did something no one had ever done: he won the +99 kg title and the open-weight superfight belt in the same year, a level of big-man dominance that simply had no precedent.
Along the way he collected wins over the previous generation’s giants — beating André Galvão in a superfight as the crown changed hands, and dominating Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida, the most decorated gi competitor alive, on short notice. He added three IBJJF No-Gi World titles and four Eddie Bravo Invitational championships for good measure. When healthy, he has gone years without losing.
He is also the sport’s great lightning rod. Ryan’s brash, trash-talking persona has made him professional grappling’s biggest villain and, not coincidentally, one of its biggest draws — a genuine pay-per-view attraction in a sport that never had many. Persistent injuries and controversy have shadowed parts of his run, and where his ceiling would have been in a longer, healthier career is one of the sport’s great what-ifs.
None of that touches the on-paper case. Judged on dominance in the highest-level no-gi competition on the planet, against the deepest fields the format has ever seen, Gordon Ryan stands alone. He took a teaching method and turned it into an era. Love him or not, the modern no-gi GOAT wears his face.
