She holds the record for the most IBJJF World Championships in women’s history — ten — and has stacked so many titles across the sport’s four major gi tournaments that her total sits in a tier of its own. For a decade, the road to the top of the women’s division has run directly through her.
Mesquita came up under Letícia Ribeiro at Gracie Humaitá, one of the great incubators of female talent, and she emerged with a game that has no obvious weakness. She passes, she plays guard, she attacks the back, she finishes — a complete competitor who can beat you standing, on top, or off her back, and who brings a ferocity that has worn down every rival the era has produced. She has been the standard against which every other woman measures herself.
Her greatness is not confined to the gi. Bia has succeeded in no-gi and on the ADCC stage, taking a title and medaling at the sport’s premier submission event against the deepest female fields ever assembled. Her matches with the next wave — Ffion Davies, Mayssa Bastos, Bianca Basilio and others — have helped push women’s grappling into a genuine golden age, one where the talent pool is finally deep enough to produce true rivalries.
What makes her a landmark figure is the combination of dominance and timing. Mesquita arrived just as women’s divisions were being taken seriously, with real fields, real stakes, and real recognition — and she seized the moment so completely that she became the face of the entire movement. Younger competitors around the world grew up wanting to be her, which is its own measure of greatness.

Placed in the context of a division that had to fight for its place on the mat, Mesquita’s achievement is even larger: she did not just win, she helped legitimize.
