The bantamweight division got turned upside down in Shanghai this weekend, a former title challenger got starched for the first time in his career, and the UFC now points toward Paris. Here is everything that mattered from the past week in MMA.
Song Yadong Stuns Umar Nurmagomedov in Shanghai
Saturday's UFC Fight Night in Shanghai delivered one of the biggest upsets of the year. Song Yadong, roughly a 4-to-1 underdog against the heavily favored Umar Nurmagomedov, timed a lead uppercut and a right hand behind the ear just as Nurmagomedov changed levels for a takedown, and the previously unbeaten-looking contender was out before he hit the canvas. The finish came at 1:48 of Round 2, per CBS Sports — the first knockout loss of Nurmagomedov's career.
Song celebrated by running to Jon Jones cageside and made his ambitions plain afterward: "Give me the title shot." Nurmagomedov, for his part, posted a classy message hours later saying he was doing fine and would learn from his mistakes, as reported by Bloody Elbow. With a signature win over a top-ranked name, Song has forced his way into the bantamweight title conversation.
Knockouts Up and Down the Card
The co-main event was just as violent. Denise Gomes stopped former strawweight title challenger Yan Xiaonan late in the first round, finishing with a brutal elbow at the 4:49 mark. Elsewhere on the card, Kai Asakura wiped out bantamweight veteran Aoriqileng with a second-round head kick, Bilal Hasan knocked out Nilson Rojas in Round 2, and Chinese prospect Liu Ce announced himself with a first-round knockout of Levi Rodrigues Jr. in his promotional debut.
The UFC paid out $400,000 in post-fight bonuses on the night, with Song and Hasan leading the list of $100,000 winners and Gomes and Asakura among those collecting additional finish bonuses, per Sherdog and MMA Mania.
Kayla Harrison Eyes a Late-2026 Return
Women's bantamweight champion Kayla Harrison will fight again before the year is out, according to her manager Ali Abdelaziz. Harrison has been sidelined since neck surgery scrapped her scheduled January title defense, and the long-awaited superfight with Amanda Nunes remains the target for her return, per Yahoo Sports. Harrison has not competed since taking the belt from Julianna Pena in 2025.
Looking Ahead: UFC Paris on Saturday
The UFC heads to the Accor Arena on September 5 for UFC Paris: Hooker vs. Parnasse. Dan Hooker (24-14), looking to snap a two-fight skid after his stoppage loss to Benoit Saint Denis at UFC 325, welcomes one of the most hyped newcomers in years: Salahdine Parnasse (23-2), the former two-division KSW champion who once held that promotion's featherweight and lightweight belts simultaneously. Parnasse rides a five-fight winning streak into his UFC debut, and oddsmakers and fans alike are split on whether the veteran's power or the newcomer's fight IQ wins out. Prelims start at 12 p.m. ET with the main card at 3 p.m. ET on Paramount+.
