MMA Weekly Roundup — August 16, 2026: Makhachev Breaks the All-Time UFC Win Record

MMA Weekly Roundup · Sunday, August 16, 2026

Philadelphia got the biggest night of the MMA year so far, and it ended with a record that had stood since Anderson Silva's prime. Here's everything that mattered over the last seven days.

UFC 330: Makhachev breaks the all-time win streak record

Islam Makhachev retained the UFC welterweight title at the Xfinity Mobile Arena on Saturday night, grinding out a unanimous decision over Ian Machado Garry on scores of 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47. It was Makhachev's first defense of the welterweight strap and his 17th consecutive victory inside the Octagon — one better than the 16-fight run Anderson Silva put together at middleweight, which had stood as the promotion's all-time record.

The win also puts Makhachev in rare company as a two-division champion with successful defenses in both weight classes. Machado Garry took the fight into deep water and stole a round on one card, but he could not solve the pressure and positional control that has defined Makhachev's title reign. Full results and scorecards are up at UFC.com, and ESPN's takeaways piece digs into what comes next.

Mackenzie Dern defends the strawweight title

In the co-main event, Mackenzie Dern made the first successful defense of her women's strawweight title with a unanimous decision over fellow grappler Gillian Robertson, sweeping the same 49-46, 49-46, 48-47 tally. Dern out-worked Robertson through the opening four rounds in a matchup that, on paper, was one of the highest-level grappling exchanges the division has produced.

For a store built around the jiu-jitsu mindset, this one is worth noting: two of the best submission grapplers in the division shared the cage for a world title, and the difference came down to volume, positional discipline and pace rather than a single finishing sequence. Jits Magazine covered the grappling angle in detail.

A finish-heavy undercard

UFC 330 delivered violence up and down the card. Jalin Turner stopped Kaue Fernandes with first-round punches. Dustin Stoltzfus submitted Mansur Abdul-Malik with a second-round rear-naked choke. Esteban Ribovics stopped Edson Barboza in the second. Charles Johnson finished Eduardo Chapolin with a second-round twister — one of the rarest submissions in the sport — and Donte Johnson closed the show early with a first-round knockout of Eric McConico. Chidi Njokuani and Tresean Gore both took clear decisions over Joel Alvarez and Vicente Luque respectively. Five of the seven preliminary bouts ended inside the distance.

Edson Barboza calls it a career

After 16 years in the UFC, Edson Barboza announced his retirement following the loss to Ribovics. Dana White paid tribute at the post-fight press conference, calling him "an absolute savage" and saying it had been "awesome having him fight in this company." Barboza leaves as one of the most consistently entertaining strikers of the modern era and the owner of a highlight reel that will outlive most title runs. Coverage at UFC.com and Yahoo Sports.

There was a second, stranger retirement out of Philadelphia too: longtime coach and analyst Din Thomas confirmed he is stepping away from cornering fighters. White's reaction when a reporter told him — "That might be a first" — was one of the more memorable moments of the presser. Bloody Elbow has the exchange.

Bookings and announcements

Court McGee, the season 11 Ultimate Fighter winner, announced that his fight at UFC 332 in Salt Lake City on October 3 will be his last. Fighting out his contract in his home state is about as clean an exit as the sport allows. Forbes broke the story.

On the crossover side, Arman Tsarukyan and Dillon Danis were booked for the inaugural RAF middleweight crossover championship at RAF 14 on October 3 at the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas. Tsarukyan gets that grappling match just weeks after his scheduled UFC 331 return against Mauricio Ruffy in September. Bloody Elbow and MMA Mania covered the booking.

Looking ahead

The UFC heads to Sacramento on Saturday, August 22 for its first event at the Golden 1 Center since 2019, headlined by a middleweight scrap between Anthony "Fluffy" Hernandez and Gregory "Robocop" Rodrigues. The card runs 13 bouts and includes a short-notice lightweight matchup between Gauge Young and undefeated newcomer Stan Dorsainvil, who steps in for the injured Kody Steele. Details at UFC.com.

After that: UFC 331 on September 19, headlined by Joshua Van vs. Alexandre Pantoja 2, then UFC 332 in Salt Lake City on October 3 and UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi on October 24, where Alexander Volkanovski defends the featherweight title against Movsar Evloev.
