A quiet-looking Fight Night turned into one of the more entertaining cards of the summer, an Octagon veteran walked away for the last time, and the promotion now rolls into a two-title pay-per-view in Philadelphia. Here is what mattered over the past seven days.
Salkilld Chokes Out Gamrot in His First Main Event
Australia's Quillan Salkilld took the biggest assignment of his career on Saturday night and turned it into a four-and-a-half-minute statement, submitting Mateusz Gamrot by rear-naked choke at 4:25 of the opening round at UFC Fight Night: Gamrot vs Salkilld in Las Vegas.
The finish was a grappler's clinic in reverse. Salkilld stung Gamrot with an early left hook, and when the Polish veteran panicked into a scramble and hunted a leg lock, Salkilld defended, out-wrestled him on the canvas, and clamped onto the neck in transition late in the frame. Per UFC's main card recap, that is three first-round finishes this year and five stoppages in six Octagon starts for the 26-year-old from Perth, who is now squarely in the lightweight title conversation after roughly two years on the roster.
For anyone who trains, the sequence is worth rewatching: the leg entanglement that looks like an offensive weapon can just as easily be the moment you give up your back.
The Rest of the Main Card
The card marked the debut of the renovated Meta APEX and delivered seven finishes across the night.
Diego Ferreira def. Billy Quarantillo, unanimous decision (30-27 x3). The Texas-based Brazilian outworked the returning Quarantillo for fifteen minutes and set a career high with 144 significant strikes landed. It was Ferreira's first win in more than two years, his 11th inside the Octagon and 20th as a professional.
Yadier del Valle def. Darren Elkins, TKO at 0:35 of Round 1. Del Valle shut down an early takedown, clipped Elkins on the break and closed with a straight left. It ended a UFC run that began in 2010 and produced 19 Octagon victories for Elkins.
Alexia Thainara def. Amanda Lemos, unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27). An excellent all-Brazilian strawweight scrap. Thainara showed new striking layers while keeping her grappling in reserve, survived a Lemos right hand that wobbled her in the second, and moved to 4-0 in the UFC with a 13-fight winning streak.
Ty Miller def. Billy Ray Goff, TKO at 0:15 of Round 3. The unbeaten New Mexican defended Goff's clinch work, took over in the second and finished with the first exchange of the third. Miller is now 8-0 with one no contest.
Prelims: A Debut Submission and a Long-Awaited Comeback
The undercard, detailed in UFC's prelim recap, opened hot and stayed there. Jose Montanha submitted Louie Sutherland by rear-naked choke at 1:50 of the first in his promotional debut. Juliana Miller leaned on her grappling to take Ravena Oliveira's back and finish by rear-naked choke in the second, her first UFC stoppage. Miles Johns halted a three-fight slide by flooring and finishing Gianni Vazquez in the first, and Diyar Nurgozhay stopped Bruno Lopes with one second left in the opening round. Steven Asplund, Manoel Sousa and Carol Foro all took unanimous decisions.
Who Got Paid
Per UFC's bonus coverage, Performance of the Night went to Salkilld and to Ty Miller, who has now collected the award in back-to-back appearances. Ferreira vs. Quarantillo took Fight of the Night.
Beyond the Octagon
PFL ran Charlotte on Sunday, where Bryan Battle edged Dalton Rosta by split decision in the headliner and Simeon Powell took a split decision over Dovlet Yagshimuradov in the co-main, per Yahoo Sports. A week earlier at PFL New York, Usman Nurmagomedov retained the lightweight world title with a first-round TKO of Archie Colgan and Dakota Ditcheva won a decision over Denise Kielholtz. ONE Championship was in Tokyo on Saturday for ONE Samurai 2 at EBARA WAVE Arena Ota.
Looking Ahead: UFC 330 and a New Contender Series Season
The promotion returns to Philadelphia on Saturday, August 15 for UFC 330 at Xfinity Mobile Arena, with two belts on the line. Welterweight champion Islam Makhachev, 28-1, defends against Ian Machado Garry in the main event, and women's strawweight champion Mackenzie Dern meets Gillian Robertson in the co-main. Edson Barboza vs. Esteban Ribovics is also booked; Erin Blanchfield vs. Jasmine Jasudavicius came off the card. Forbes has the full bout order.
Before that, Dana White's Contender Series returns Tuesday with the Season 10 premiere at the Meta APEX. Given how many Contender Series graduates won on Saturday's card, it is worth paying attention to.
