The next generation had the spotlight in Texas this weekend, a Gracie collected a five-figure payday in Sao Paulo, and the roster shuffling ahead of ADCC Worlds continued. Here is the week in grappling.
ADCC Youth World Championship Takes Over Austin
The 2026 ADCC Youth World Championship ran Sunday, August 9 at the Travis County Exposition Center in Austin, Texas, drawing 258 competitors from 151 academies across 62 divisions. FloGrappling carried the event live and has posted the final results.
The format is what makes this one different. There is no open registration: every athlete is invited. Each age group and gender takes 24 athletes, eleven of whom come through the Youth Trials (four from the West Coast trial, four from the East Coast, three from Brazil), with the remainder earning their spot on points accumulated by medalling in advanced divisions at ADCC Opens. The 7-8 age group is capped at sixteen and has no trials at all, so those invites are decided on points alone. Weight classes are not fixed in advance either; ADCC builds them around the athletes who accept invitations. Divisions ran as four-person brackets, with two-person divisions decided best of three.
The ADCC US Open in Austin ran on Saturday, August 8, giving the same venue a full weekend of no-gi.
Gregor Gracie Takes the BJJ Stars Masters Grand Prix
At BJJ Stars 19 at Vibra Sao Paulo, Gregor Gracie won the sixteen-man Masters absolute Grand Prix, finishing three of his four matches by submission, including a late finish in the final. The one-night tournament carried a R$200,000 prize. Elsewhere on the card, James Ortiz became the first non-Brazilian to win at BJJ Stars since 2022, and Renato Moicano submitted Patricky Freire with an arm-triangle choke. LIJJN also ran its biggest event to date, Harlem Free Fight 3, with Natan Chueng defeating Chazz Canas by decision in the main event.
Around the Grappling World
Plenty of movement off the mats this week, per FloGrappling's Grappling Bulletin:
- Polaris stripped Ethan Crelinsten of its promotional championship after he signed an exclusive deal with UFC BJJ.
- Craig Jones has signed with the PGF for its upcoming tenth season, with the terms not yet specified. Joshua Flores joins the Philly Phenoms as their 145-pound athlete.
- IBJJF has opened registration for No-Gi Worlds, and added seminars to Jiu-Jitsu Con from Nova Uniao and Gigi Paiva plus a talk with the founders of BJJ Fanatics.
- Gabi Pessanha received the Medalha de Merito Desportivo Militar from the Brazilian Air Force in recognition of her competitive record.
- Rafael Lovato Jr. meets Pawel Jaworski in a no-gi superfight at ONE Fight Night 47 on September 4.
One booking came off the calendar: the Fabricio Werdum vs. Junior dos Santos grappling trilogy match, set for Kings Championship on August 8 in Florianopolis, did not happen after dos Santos withdrew. He has said he still wants the match down the road.
The Road to Krakow
The 2026 ADCC World Championship is now roughly a month out, set for September 12-13 in Krakow, Poland. Kaynan Duarte is entered at -99kg and has spoken publicly about the field in the absence of Gordon Ryan, while Felipe Pena is back on the entry list with plenty left to prove. FloGrappling has also partnered with No-Gi Ratings to publish algorithmic ELO rankings for the Worlds field, which is a genuinely useful lens if you like arguing about seeding.
Before that, the 2026 IBJJF World Master Championship returns to Las Vegas from September 3-5, and the athlete list is now public. If you compete masters, that entry list is worth a look.
